세종대왕과 황희 King Sejong and Hwang Hee

조선의 명재상을 꼽을라면 황희를 꼽을 수 있다. 우리에게 익숙한 황희는 고려말부터 조선 초기까지 활약하뎐 문인으로, 고려말 우왕-창왕-공양왕과 조선초 태조-정조-태종-세종-문종을 섬겼던 사람이기도 하다. 오랜 정치 생활에서도 그에게 유일하게 피곤한 왕이 있었으니 그게 바로 세종이였다. 오랜시간 나리일을 했던 황희의 나이가 90이 되었을 때 세종에게 아뢰기를 " 신의 나이가 90에 가까운데, 공이 없어 녹을 먹으오니 청하옵건대, 신의 직책을 파하여 하늘의 꾸지람에 응답하소서"하니 세종은 이에 윤허하지 않았다고 한다.

 

세종이 22세에 즉위할 당시 황희의 나이가 이미 56세였다고 한다. 환갑이 얼마남지 않았을 때에 세종에게 아뢰기를

"지극히 노쇠하여 귀먹고 잊음이 많아서 듣고 살피기가 이미 어렵사온데, 늙은 병이 자주 침노하여 행보가 심히 어렵습니다. 엎드려 바라오니, 저하께서는 신의 쇠하고 늙음을 불쌍히 여기시고 신의 지극한 정을 살피시와 한산한 곳에 던져두셔서 신으로 하여금 길이 성상의 은택에 젖어 쇠약한 몸을 수양하게 하옵소서" 하였으나 세종이 윤허하지 아니하였다.

 

황희가 아뢰길 "더욱이 지루한 숙질로 인하여 현기증 위에 다시 정신의 혼미마저 겹쳐 의약의 효력이 없고는, 노쇠와 질병이 더욱 깊어만 가옵니다. 노둔한 모에 건망이 심하여 직접 눈으로 보고 입으로 말한 것조차도 문득 기억하지 못하오며, 귀가 어둡고 잘 들리지 않아서 의식때에 절하고 일어나라는 홀기 부르는 소리마저 얻어듣지 못하옴은 사람들이 모두 아는 사실이며 결코 허식이 아닙니다."

황희는 '노쇠하고 질병이 있다'는 이유로 끈질기게 사직을 요청하였다. 하지만 세종 역시 줄기차게 이를 거절했다. 결국 세종의 재임기간인 31년 중 황희는 18년을 영의정으로 재직하며 일을 하여야 했다.

 

황희가 힘들어 사직을 요청할때면 세종은

"경의 나이가 아직 극쇠에 미치지 않았고, 병 또한 깊은데 이르지 않은즉, 기력이 오히려 강건하여 국정을 잡을 만하고, 만일 질병이 생겼다면 마땅히 의약의 치료를 가해야 할 것이요, 설사 상투적인 허식은 아니라 할지라도, 어찌 상규에 구애로 직임을 사퇴하리오" 세종의 말인 즉 '아직 죽을 만큼 쇠약하지 않고 병 도한 깊지 않으며 만일 큰 질병이 발견된다면 치료를 하면 되지 않겠냐'는 말이었다.

 

이렇듯 황희가 노후가 되어서 사직을 권할때면 세종은 여러가지 이유를 들어 그의 사직을 허하지 않았다고 한다. 재상으로써 뛰었났던 황희를 놓을  수 없었던 세종의 마음과 노후에 쉬를 원했던 황희의 줄다리기는 1449년 황희의 나이 87세에야 겨우 은퇴를 할 수 있었다고 한다. 그리고 3년 뒤에 황희는 세상을 떠난다. 세종이 세상을 떠나고 난 2년후의 일이였다. 결국 황희는 세종의 마지막을 지켜보고서 그의 아들 문종이 즉위하는 모습까지 지켜보았던 것이다.

 

 

 

 

 

Hwang Hee is one of the most prestigious figures of Joseon. Hwang Hui, who was familiar to us, was a literary figure who served King Wu Wang-Chang Wang-Gongyang and King Taejo-Jeongjo-Taejong-Sejong-Munjong during the late Goryeo Dynasty to the early Joseon Dynasty. Even in his long political career, he had the only tired king, so that was Sejong. When Hwang Hee, who had been working for a long time, reached 90, he told Sejong, "God's age is close to 90, but there is no ball, so I ask you to respond to heaven's scolding by breaking down God's position." Sejong did not give credit to it.

Hwang Hee was already 56 years old when Sejong ascended to the throne at the age of 22. When the 60s were just around the corner, King Sejong would have given the Aroegi.

"It's already difficult to listen and watch because I'm very old and deaf and forgetful, but it's very difficult to move because the old disease is so frequent. When I lay down on my stomach, the king felt sorry for God's decline and old age, and he looked at God's extreme affection and threw it in a quiet place so that God could cultivate a weak body in the sanctuary of the spirit." But King Sejong did not make it easy.

Hwang Hee-gil said, "Moreover, due to the boring proficiency, the confusion of the mind overlaps with dizziness again, and the effect of medicine is not effective, and the old age and disease are deeper." Everyone knows, and it's not vain, that they can't remember what they saw and said with their own eyes, or that they can't hear them well enough to hear Holgi's call to bow and stand up at the ceremony."

Hwang Hee persistently asked for his resignation because he was "sick and ill." However, King Sejong consistently rejected the request. In the end, during King Sejong's 31 years in office, Hwang Hui had to serve 18 years as a government councilor.

When Huang Hui asks for his resignation, King Sejong will...

"Your age is not yet at its peak, your illness is not deep enough, your strength is rather strong, and if you have a disease, you will have to give medication, even if it's not a cliche, how do you resign your office?" Sejong said, "If you don't have a disease, you will not be found."

As such, when Hwang Hui recommended his resignation in his old age, Sejong refused to grant his resignation for various reasons. It is said that King Sejong's heart, which could not let go of Hwang Hee, who played as a minister, and Hwang Hee's tug-of-war, which wanted to rest in his old age, were only able to retire at the age of 87 in 1449. And three years later, Hwang Hee will die. It was two years after Sejong passed away. In the end, Hwang Hee watched King Sejong's death and watched his son King Munjong ascended to the throne.
