세종이 남긴 일화들 anecdotes left by King Sejong

세종이 재위한 31년의 기간동안 많은 일화가 있다. 그가 업적을 이루면서 생겼던 일화들은 그의 업적의 수만큼 많지 않을까한다. 세종의 이야기를 할 때면 놓치 수 없는 재미있는 이야기를 적어 본다.

 

세종이 여러가지 제도들을 만들 수 있었던건 집현전 학자들의 공이 매우 컸다. 세종이 백성을 위해 여러 가지 정책을 펼치려 하면 신하들은 이를 실현하기 위해 밤낮으로 업무에 매달려야 했다. 당시 세종과 집현전 학자들은긴밀한 유대관계를 형성하고 있었으며 세종은 이들을 매우 아꼈다고 한다. 이로 인한 일화가 있다

 

' 어느 늦은 밤, 세종은 내관을 시켜 숙직하는 학사가 무엇을 하는지 엿보고 오도록 했다. 그날 밤 숙직을 맡은 이는 신숙주였는데 그는 어려서부터 총명했으며 어른이 되어서도 오직 학문에만 전념한 인물이었다. 역시나 그날도 신숙주는 밤이 깊어지도록 글을 일고 있었다. 이에 내관이 세종에게 보고했다.

" 전하, 신이 서너 번이나 가보았는데, 글 읽기를 계속하고 있아옵니다."

"다시 가서 살펴봐라."

이미 첫닭이 운 이후였다. 내시가 다시 집현전으로 달려갔다. 그제야 신숙주는 촛불을 끄고 잠자리에 들었다. 내관의 보고를 받은 세종은 집현전으로 직접 나가, 자신이 입고 있던 옷을 벗어 신숙주를 덮어주었다. 아침에 일어난 신숙주가 이 사실을 알고 임금에게 큰절을 올렸다. 이 소문을 들은 집현전 학사와 선비들은 서로 질세라 더욱 학문에 힘쓰게 됐다.'

 

물론이 일화를 보면 세종은 신하를 사랑하였는지도 모르겠다. 하지만 한편으로 보면 자신을 지켜보는 상사를 든 것이나 다름이 없으니 신하로써는 피곤하였을지도 모르겠다

 

두번째 일화는 세종13년 영의정 이직과 우의정 권진이란 신하의 이야기다

우의정 권직이 세종을 찾아가 아뢰었다 '제 나이가 이미 75세라, 둔하고 사리가 어두워서 하는 일마다 실수가 있으니 그만 사직하게습니다' 라고 아뢰며 또한 계속 관직에 있으면 자신보다 어진 이가 승진하기 어렵다는 이유를 대며 사직을 거듭 청하기도 한다. 하지만 세종은 이를 받아들이기는 커녕 오히려 그를 우의정의 자리에 앉혀버렸다. 세종은 권진이 죽기 전까지 매번 불러 정사를 논하였다고 한다.

영의정 이직은 영의정의 자리에 오른 후 병이 나서 사직서를 제출했다고 한다. 하지만 세종은 이를 허락하지 않았다고 한다. 세종은 신하가 사직을 청할 때마다 더욱 그들을 붙잡았다고 한다. 신하의 입장에서는 이렇듯 집요한 세종때문에 노후에도 편할 수가 없었다. 세종의 입장은 좋은 인재를 쉽게 놓을 수 없음에서 나온 행동들이 아닌가 싶다

 

세번째 일화는 윤회라는 신하에 대한 이야기이다.

윤회는 똑똑했지만 술을 너무 좋아하여 술로인한 사고가 잦았던 인물로 유명하다. 어느 날 윤회가 모친상을 당한다. 조선시대에는 부모상을 당하면 벼슬을 그만두고 삼년상을 지내야 했다. 일 중독자 세종이라 한들 윤회에게 일을 시킬 수는 없었다. 그런데 이때 세종은 변칙을 쓴다. "주요 관직의 공무원들은 딱 100일간만 상을 지내고 바로 복직하라" 명을 한다.

이에 윤회가 그럴 수없다고 아뢰었다. 그러자 세종이 답하길

" 경의 어버이를 생각하는 정으로서는 비록 삼년상을 마칠지라도 족하지 못하며, 나의 나라를 위하는 생각으로 어찌 하루라도 어진 이가 없을 수 있을랴. 남의 슬픈 마음을 빼앗는 것은 부득이한 일이며, 때에 따라 변통하는 도를 어찌 페할 수 있으랴. 힘써 나의 의사에 좇아서 그대의 벼슬에 나아갈 것이며, 사야하는 바는 마땅히 윤허사지 아니하겠다."

말인 즉 그저 슬픔을 잊는 최고의 방법은 열심히 일하는 것뿐이라는 말이였다.

The reason why Sejong was able to create various institutions was largely due to scholars before Jiphyeonjeon. When Sejong tried to implement various policies for the people, his servants had to work day and night to realize this. At that time, Sejong and Jiphyeon scholars formed close ties, and Sejong was very fond of them. There is an anecdote about this.

"Late one night, Sejong had his office check in and see what the undergraduates were doing. It was Shin Sook-ju, who was in charge of the night's night duty, who was bright from an early age and devoted only to learning even as an adult. As expected, Shin Sook-ju was writing until the night fell. Accordingly, the inner circle reported to this to Sejong.

"Your Grace, God has been there three or four times, and he is still reading."

"Go back and look."

It was already after the first chicken cried. The eunuch ran back to the house. Then Shin Sook-ju blew out the candles and went to bed. Upon receiving a report from the inside, Sejong went out to Jiphyeonjeon and took off his clothes and covered the new host. Shin Sook-ju, who woke up in the morning, found out about this and bowed to the king. After hearing the rumor, the scholars and scholars of Jiphyeonjeon lost each other and became more eager to study.'

Of course, if you look at this anecdote, Sejong might have loved his servant. But on the other hand, he may have been tired as a servant because he had a boss watching him.

The second anecdote is the story of King Sejong's 13th anniversary of the death of King Yeonguijeong and his lieutenant, who is called Woouijeong's authority.

Woo Eui-jung visited Sejong and said, "I'm already 75 years old, so I'm going to resign because I'm slow and have a dark reason, so I'm going to make a mistake in everything I do." He also repeatedly asks for resignation, citing the reason that it is difficult for a person older than him to get promoted. However, King Sejong did not accept it, but rather put him in the position of Woouijeong. Sejong reportedly called every time to discuss political affairs before Kwon Jin died.

It is said that the transfer of the Yeonguijeong was made ill and submitted a letter of resignation after taking the position of the Yeonguijeong. However, King Sejong did not allow it. Sejong is said to have caught them even more whenever his servant asked for resignation. From the servant's point of view, he could not be comfortable in his later years because of such persistent Sejong. Sejong's position seems to have come from the fact that good talent cannot be easily placed.

The third anecdote is about a servant named Yunhoe.

 

Yoon-hoe was smart, but he loved drinking so much that he was famous for frequent accidents caused by alcohol. One day, Yun-hoe gets hurt by his mother. During the Joseon Dynasty, he had to resign from his official post and live for three years if he was injured by his parents. Even though he was a workaholic, he couldn't have Yoonhoe work. But at this time, Sejong uses an anomaly. "Civil servants in key government posts should return to work immediately after only 100 days of mourning."

In response, Yoon-hoe said, "I can't do that." Then King Sejong answered,

"Even though the three-year mourning period is not enough for you to think of your parents, how can no one be born a day with the thought of my country? It is inevitable to take away other people's sad hearts, and how can you take advantage of the way they behave? I will go to your office in accordance with my will, and I will not buy what I have to buy."

In other words, the best way to forget sadness is to work hard.
